MEPBG - update and new appointments Oct 2023
How we are evolving Founder Chairman Nick Westcott's legacy

MEPBG - New Appointments and Update:
An MEPBG meeting was held at the Exford White Horse Inn (24 Oct). It was productive and proactive, with invaluable knowledge transfer. Topics discussed included the
Exmoor Pony Genome Project
and how to best progress the enormous opportunities opening up from mapping the genome of the Exmoor pony. Along with working with the
Equus Survival Trust on DNA verified lineage tracking of authentic multi-generation Exmoor ponies outside of the closed stud book and those experiencing pedigree registration delays.
Appointment of new MEPBG Chairman, President and Treasurer:
Following the very sad death of the
MEPBG’s Founding Chairman, Nick Westcott
(Holtball Herd 11), in June, it was unanimously decided at the meeting to appoint
Dawn Westcott (Holtball Herd 11)
as
MEPBG Chairman,
Rex Milton
(Withypoole Herd 23)
as
MEPBG President and
Maria Floyd (Tippbarlake Herd 387)
as
Treasurer
- proposed by Ben Williams and seconded by Nigel Floyd.
After discussing how best to remember the exemplary work Nick did in addressing issues within the Exmoor pony world and bringing moorland herd owners together to form the MEPBG in 2014, it was decided that the words ‘founded by Nick Westcott’ will be included with mention of the MEPBG, as a memorial tribute to Nick and his legacy.
Please feel welcome to read the Tribute to Nick Westcott.
We continue our work to identify issues that are causing long delays (and lost sales) with Exmoor pony pedigree registrations and passporting. We are also working on ways to improve recognition and status for purebred Exmoor ponies, where there is still no upgrading system in the closed stud book. As well as the ongoing EST DNA project, this includes issuing
MEPBG Certificates of Authenticity
for Exmoor MEPBG members ponies born and bred in
Exmoor National Park. We feel more can be done to highlight the recognition and status of Exmoor ponies born and bred on Exmoor.
With MEPBG herd owners working together to explore and embrace advancements in science - which can potentially help to protect and safeguard the wellbeing and genetic health and diversity of Exmoor ponies - the future is looking very promising and we welcome your support and involvement.
The door is always open, so please get in touch with any questions, queries, thoughts, ideas, concerns - and help us to shape the MEPBG to be the best we can be for the ponies and future generations of Exmoor herd owners."
